Practice this questionWhy interviewers ask this
The panel learns what you value, the scale you have worked at, and how you get things done. They also notice whether you can talk about success without sounding arrogant or vague.
What a strong answer does
- Pick an achievement relevant to this role, ideally recent.
- Make your personal contribution clear, even if it was a team effort.
- Quantify the result and say why it mattered to the business.
Structure it with STAR
- SituationSet the scene in two or three sentences: where, when, what was at stake.
- TaskWhat you were responsible for, and what made it hard.
- ActionThe steps you took yourself. This should be the longest part.
- ResultWhat happened, with numbers if you have them, and what you learned.

Example answer
- Situation
- Our mobile app had a 2.1-star rating, mostly because of crashes on older Android phones, and marketing had paused paid campaigns because of it.
- Task
- I was asked to lead a four-week stability push with two other engineers.
- Action
- I set up crash grouping so we could see that 70% of crashes came from three causes, and we fixed those first instead of working through the backlog in order. I added a test run on the five oldest devices we supported, and I published a short weekly update for marketing so they could see progress.
- Result
- The crash-free session rate went from 94% to 99.6%, the rating rose to 4.3 over the next two months, and marketing restarted campaigns. The device test run is still part of every release.
Use it for the shape, not the words: your own story, told in your own words, will always score better.
What interviewers listen for
- A clear, honest answer backed by one or two concrete examples.
- Self-awareness: what you know about how you work and how you are growing.
- A link to the role you are interviewing for.
Common mistakes
- An achievement from so long ago it raises questions about recent work.
- All "we", so the panel cannot tell what you did.
- No numbers or outcome.
Likely follow-up questions
- What was the hardest part?
- What would you do differently?
- How did you measure success?
