Why interviewers ask this

Interviewers are testing self-awareness and honesty, not hunting for a reason to reject you. They want to see that you can name a real gap, that you understand its effect on your work, and that you are actively doing something about it.

What a strong answer does

  • Name a real weakness that matters at work but is not central to this role.
  • Give a short example of when it caused a problem.
  • Spend most of the answer on what you are doing about it, and the evidence it is working.

Structure it with STAR

  1. SituationSet the scene in two or three sentences: where, when, what was at stake.
  2. TaskWhat you were responsible for, and what made it hard.
  3. ActionThe steps you took yourself. This should be the longest part.
  4. ResultWhat happened, with numbers if you have them, and what you learned.

Example answer

I have tended to say yes to too many requests from other teams. Early last year it caught up with me: I had agreed to help three teams with integrations, and my own team's release slipped by a week because I was the bottleneck on reviews.

Since then I keep a visible list of what I have committed to, and when a new request comes in I tell the person what it would displace and let my manager decide when it is close. I also started pointing people to documentation instead of answering everything myself.

This year I have not missed a commitment, and two of those teams now self-serve from the docs I wrote. I still have to watch it, but it is a lot more under control.

Use it for the shape, not the words: your own story, told in your own words, will always score better.

What interviewers listen for

  • A clear, honest answer backed by one or two concrete examples.
  • Self-awareness: what you know about how you work and how you are growing.
  • A link to the role you are interviewing for.

Common mistakes

  • Disguised strengths like "I work too hard" or "I am a perfectionist". Interviewers hear them every day.
  • Naming a weakness that is a core requirement of the job.
  • Describing the weakness with no plan, or a plan with no evidence it works.
  • Being so candid that the weakness becomes the main thing they remember.

Likely follow-up questions

  • How would your manager describe that weakness?
  • What is another area you are working on?
  • Tell me about a time it caused a real problem.
