Why interviewers ask this

This is the "where do you see yourself in five years" question. The panel is checking for ambition, realism, and whether this role fits your plan, so you are likely to stay and grow rather than leave in a year.

What a strong answer does

  • Describe a direction, not a job title on a date.
  • Show how this role is a real step on that path.
  • Mention the skills you want to build, not only the position you want.

Structure it with STAR

  1. SituationSet the scene in two or three sentences: where, when, what was at stake.
  2. TaskWhat you were responsible for, and what made it hard.
  3. ActionThe steps you took yourself. This should be the longest part.
  4. ResultWhat happened, with numbers if you have them, and what you learned.

Example answer

Long term I want to lead product for a data-heavy product, where the decisions depend on understanding the numbers well. To get there I need two things I do not have yet: owning a product area end to end, and managing other product managers.

This role gives me the first directly, and you mentioned the team is growing, so there may be a chance to mentor newer PMs over the next couple of years. That is the path I would like to take here.

What interviewers listen for

  • A clear, honest answer backed by one or two concrete examples.
  • Self-awareness: what you know about how you work and how you are growing.
  • A link to the role you are interviewing for.

Common mistakes

  • Saying you want the interviewer's job, or to start your own company soon.
  • "I have not really thought about it."
  • A plan that has nothing to do with this role.

Likely follow-up questions

  • What are you doing now to get there?
  • How would this role help you get there?
  • What would make you leave this job?
