Leadership interview questions
Leadership questions come up for managers, team leads and senior individual contributors alike. The panel wants to know how you get results through other people: how you set direction, coach, make the hard calls and handle people who are struggling.
The trap is talking in "we" and in philosophy. Pick one team and one situation, say what you personally decided and said, and finish with a result someone could measure, such as a delivery date, a retention number or a promotion.
Every answer below follows the STAR method.
What interviewers listen for
- A specific team, a specific problem, and the decision you personally made.
- How you brought people along: the conversations, the trade-offs you explained, who disagreed.
- A result you can measure, such as delivery dates, attrition, promotions or quality.
Common mistakes
- Saying "we" for every step, so the panel cannot tell what you did.
- A management philosophy with no story behind it.
